The Historic Benson Grist Mill near Stansbury Park, Utah, is a place that everyone with an interest in the pioneer days, or those with a pride of the past should visit. A brief history of the site states that it was built as an industrial site to provide the needs of the Mormon communities of the surrounding areas of the 1800’s era.
The mill used to be used to make and/or process flour, corn meal and other things later on, including wheat. The mill was still operating and making flour, in the 1940’s.
Besides the actual Grist Mill, there was other important industrial sites or buildings built nearby, including a sawmill and even a tannery, where the skins of animals were processed for making leather and more. In the 1980’s a group of volunteers formed that began restoration of this historic site. The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Sites in the early 1970’s.
The site offers a great history of the pioneer industrial era, and is sure to make any history buff’s journey there, very rewarding, it’s also the perfect place to let your children and anyone realize what the earlier times of industrialization in Utah and life in general was like.
There are numerous sights and sounds of the past to be seen and heard while visiting the Benson Grist Mill, and many modern day activities are held at different times of the year, to entertain anyone that journeys there. Some of the buildings and sites you can tour through, include:
A Pioneer cabin, that you can venture through to see what daily life was like for those back in this era. Can you imagine living without cell phones, microwave ovens, computers, internet and all of the modern devices and appliances that we think we cannot do without these days, these pioneers of the past did just that, and they were probably more happy and content with their lives, then a lot of people are today with all of our so called luxuries.
Visit the Blacksmith Shop, and see how items that we can make today with automated machines by the thousands per hour, such as: nails, iron tools and a lot more, were made one piece at a time, by hand, using such things as; iron, fire, anvil, hammer, and a whole lot of muscle and sweat.
There is a lot of other unique places on the site to visit and sights to enjoy, such as; pioneer wagon displays, remember these folks traveled by horse and wagon, and buggies, they did not have the luxury of automobiles with heated interiors, or air conditioning during the hot traveling times. See an actual spinning wheel, or get up close to a loom, a device used for weaving material into cloth, inside the Loom Exhibit Building.
The site also has a Country Store, where you can find all kind of wonderful locally made crafts, souvenirs and lots of other items, that make great gifts for family and friends, and yourself.
At certain times of the year, there are numerous fun filled activities and special events held on the Historic Benson Grist Mill site, including such things as; The Pumpkin Walk in October, where the area is filled with wonderful scenes using pumpkins. On Saturdays, usually from August to early October, there is a large Farmers Market, and craft fair held on the site.
