Thanksgiving Turkey Feather Candles

Need the perfect centerpiece for your Thanksgiving dinner table? How about a turkey? There’s nothing more suitable for Thanksgiving than a turkey. Not the turkey you’re going to eat – a turkey that will light up your Thanksgiving table. It’s the cutest thing: a turkey with feathers that are actually candles. You can make it quickly and you’ll be surprised at just how much fun it will add to your holiday.

Start with a small pumpkin to make the body of the turkey. The best pumpkin is a round one without a stem. If the pumpkin has a stem just cut it down as far as possible. Cut a thin piece from one side of the pumpkin so that it will sit flat on a table. Set the pumpkin so that the area where the stem was is pointing off to one side.

Use a butternut squash piece to make the head of the turkey. The perfect squash would have a short stem. Cut a five-inch chunk from the top, down, from the squash. Position the cut side of the squash against the stem area of the pumpkin. Push skewers through the squash, and into the pumpkin, to secure it.

Use hot glue to attach beans, beads, or even wiggly eyes onto the squash. The stem of the squash will be the beak of the turkey. To make the wattle, cut a piece of dried tomato and stick it to the squash with toothpicks. Or, cut a piece of felt and use hot glue to attach it. Even a deflated balloon could become the wattle for the turkey.

Cut two sides off of the squash and use them to make feet. Cut a half-oval shape for each foot. The straight end of the shape will be the back of the foot. For the front of the foot, just cut a couple of “v” shapes to create the “toes”. Slightly lift the pumpkin and slide the straight end of the foot under it. Do the same with the other foot.

Poke holes in the back area of the pumpkin to make room for the candles, which will be the feathers. Make two or three rows, with the holes spaced apart, but don’t go too far back on the pumpkin. Make the holes with something like a screwdriver or ice pick. Then, make the holes larger using a sharp knife.

Taper candles make the perfect feathers for the turkey centerpiece, especially if they’re all different colors, like red, orange, yellow, or brown. Place a taper into each hole, making sure the candles are standing straight up and down. Light them to create a glowing ambiance. The adorable turkey centerpiece will definitely be the talk of the Thanksgiving table.
