Survivor South Pacific Episode 1

Survivor South Pacific returns with a 90 minute episode; this format hasn’t been used for the premiere episode in several seasons, but it allows us to get more acquainted with the castaways. This season was filmed near the same location that Survivor: Samoa was filmed.

The tribes were already divided into two groups, with the exception of the two returning players, which Jeff announced the arrival of. When the castaways realized that two tribemates were returning, one person said that she hoped that Russell Hantz wasn’t returning. Brandon Hantz, Russell’s nephew, later said to the camera that he wasn’t going to tell anybody what his last name was (although he had two tattoos with Hantz written on it). A helicopter arrived with the two returning castaways, Ozzy and Coach. They both broke eggs to determine what tribe they were going to be on. Coach will be on the blue tribe (Upolu), while Ozzy will be on the red tribe (Savaii).

Jeff announced the first challenge; which pitted Ozzy and Coach against each other, with the other players looking on. The challenge involved climbing a pole to retrieve a turtle, digging a hole and climbing under a log, and completing a puzzle that involved moving a pyramid. The onlookers gave advice as they watched the two returnees complete the puzzle. The red team’s advice was helpful, and Ozzy won. The prize was flint to make fire, along with taro to eat (which is a lot like potatoes).

First Impressions of Fellow Survivors

Savaii decided to enjoy their first day on the beach, getting to know each other. Most of them had no problem running into the water enjoying themselves, but Cochran had a big problem with going into the water. He was very self-conscious of swimming in his underwear.

Over on Upolu, the tribe was also getting to know each other. They all told each other a little bit about their jobs. After quickly getting to know each other, they got down to the business of building the shelter. While building the shelter, Christine started looking for the hidden immunity idol. Earlier, Christine had said that the returning players were temporary players; Coach, at least, thought that she should be one of the first people to go.

Brandon Hantz was uncomfortable being around Mikayla. God was important to him, and she didn’t seem to be very modest. He was married, and he didn’t want to get into trouble. While he may be Russell Hantz’s nephew, he doesn’t seem to be anything like his notorious uncle.

The next morning, Dawn was not feeling very good. She was used to drinking a lot more water than she was, and her legs were cramping up. As she talked to Ozzie, she started crying. He gave her encouraging words, but it seemed like everybody else in the tribe saw her.

Brandon caught the first fish for the players on the Upolu tribe. While he swam, he wouldn’t take off his shirt completely. He covered up the tattoos on his back and his arm.

The First Challenge

It was time for the first Survivor challenge. The tribes would first run through some obstacles, and then had to climb over a 10 foot wall. Cochran took a little more time than the rest of his tribemates. In the next stage, one player dug through some sand for a machete, which they would use to cut some ropes. Once the ropes were cut, it would release a lot of coconuts. Three players shot baskets into a net. When the net had enough coconuts in it, the net would fall and raise the tribe flag.

The teams both were close towards the basketball section. Semhar was tired out, while Mikayla kept on scoring for the Upolu tribe, which won both immunity and fire for the tribe. Although Upolu won, they only won by a hair. When Jeff asked Semhar about not being able to win for the tribe, she said that she felt “sorta bad” that she wasn’t able to contribute much to the team’s win. That’s not really the way to apologize for helping the tribe lose an immunity challenge.

Back at Camp

Once Upolu returned to camp, the tribe started looking for the hidden immunity idol clue that Jeff said would be there.

When Savaii returned to camp, Semhar complained about how Jim had made faces behind her back when she had said that she felt “kinda bad” about losing the challenge for her team. It seemed to add to the drama. On the other hand, Cochran was not very athletic, and didn’t contribute much to the challenge. Ozzy told Semhar that she was one of the people that they were considering voting off, and told her to try to start politicking. Cochran seemed embarrassed that he was in the running to be voted off first.

Survivor South Pacific’s First Tribal Council

At Tribal Council, Dawn admitted that arriving at camp caused her to lose some of her confidence. They admitted that Semhar had also gotten off to a bad start. Dawn pointed out that Cochran might also be a target because he looked a little bit different. Papa Bear stood up for him, saying that he was temporarily confused. Before Jeff said that it was time to vote, Cochran pointed out that Semhar didn’t really work so hard. Cochrane said that he was good at learning new things, and that he was enthusiastic. Semhar said that his enthusiasm could work against him.

When the time came to vote, it was nearly a unanimous vote against Semhar. While Cochran may seem like a 98 pound geek weakling up against a much cooler opponent, his enthusiasm for the game seemed to be more of an asset to the tribe than Semhar’s lackadaisical attitude.
