Superhero Halloween Costumes

Although I’m not absolutely positive, I’d be willing to be that, when a new superhero movies comes out, like Spiderman, Batman, or Iron Man, there’s a rise in the number of kids who want to dress up like superheroes for Halloween. How lucky can you get, as a parent? A superhero costume is one of the easiest ones a person can make for a child – or an adult. Using things you already have, or inexpensive things from the store, you can quickly throw together an impressive superhero costume for anyone, including a baby.

A stretch-knit outfit is a must when making a superhero costume. It can be a pajama set or some stretch-knit pants and a long sleeve shirt. Even if you’re starting with pajamas you’ll still need the shirt to have long sleeves. The two pieces make the main part of the costume. They should fit well and should not be baggy.

There are different ways to add an emblem to the front of the shirt to create the superhero you want. One way is to cut a shape, like a lightning bolt, from felt. Just sew or glue the felt to the front of the shirt and you’re finished. Instead of a shape you can just cut a letter from felt. The letter can be the first letter of your child’s name, a large “S” for a Superman costume, or another letter.

Another way to make an emblem for the costume is to just use a paint marker. Available in many colors, the marker contains real paint, so the emblem, when dry, won’t smear or run. Yet another option is to cut a shape, like a bat, from fabric. Glue or sew the emblem in place on the shirt.

A belt is a must for the superhero costume and you can easily make one with felt. Just cut a piece that’s long enough to wrap around the waist – plus a couple of extra inches – and make the belt wide. Sew or glue a Velcro piece to each end of the belt to use as a fastener. Now, make the belt you want. You can glue on a flat, painted piece of wood, cut a shape from felt or foam and attach it, or just draw on a buckle by using a paint marker. A suitable belt can also be made from craft foam, which is available in many colors and is very inexpensive.

The superhero costume definitely needs a cape to complete it. Use a sheet or a large piece of fabric. Cut the piece to be long enough to go from the back of the neck, to the floor or to the backs of the knees. Cut it to be wide enough to wrap all the way around the child. Hem around all four sides.

Use a ribbon to make the tie. Just sew the ribbon across the top of the cape. As you do, gather the fabric, so that the neck area of the cape will be fitted.

A superhero costume is so easy to make and your child – or you – will look fabulous. This Halloween will be hassle-free because a superhero costume is so simple to make. If you’ll want to be a superhero in the future, just change the way the costume looks, by removing the original emblem and replacing it with another.
