Sigh No More: Favorite Album of 2011

“Roll away your stone, I’ll roll away mine….this newly impassioned soul…”

What is it about Mumford and Sons album Sigh No More that speaks to my sister and I? Why do we cry and smile at the same time when we watch them perform? What is it about their sound that makes us feel connected?

When you watch them you will hear a blend of four voices, and a variety of instruments with an old, almost-Celtic sound. In the video “Roll Away Your Stone”, you watch their passion for music unfold as they smile, bounce/bob their heads, and stomp their feet. There are no special lights, no dancers, no flashy side shows, just a solid sound with lyrics that show their passions in life.

When life doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, I sit on my front porch. Just the white wicker chair, the warm breeze, leaves falling slowly to the ground, sounds of kids playing next door….Sign No More plays…. “Awake My Soul”… For that brief time as I listen to the album I feel a sense of renewal. Of peace. Of purpose. Every time I do this, there is one line that always resonates with me– in these bodies we will live, in these bodies we will die, where you invest your love, you invest your life…

I find myself wondering–is it possible that music heals? Is music that powerful?

I think we all want to be inspired. We want to be the best version of ourselves. We want to take something we are passionate about and share it. Show who we are through our work. Move people to change. Music does do that.

They have been touring since 2008. Since I just discovered them, I realize I have lost three years of their music, their concerts, their soul-touching lyrics. Know that I won’t miss another day from here on out. Mumford and Sons, Sigh No More album is the best of 2011….well at least to two Italian/Irish girls in Ohio…and 2 million others on Facebook.
