Santorini Island, Greece

Santorini, Greece often referred to as Thira is located 120 miles southeast of mainland Greece and is the outer most island in the Cyclades chain of islands. Santorini is what is left after a tremendous volcanic eruption that left an enormous rectangular lagoon surrounded by 980 foot cliffs that slope down to the Aegean Sea. There are two channels that allow for movement from the lagoon to the open sea thus making this an active shipping area. It is believed that Santorini is the site of one of the largest volcanic eruption to have ever happened about 3600 years ago during the pinnacle of Minoan civilization.

Excavations of sites on Santorini have uncovered amazing finds including many building complexes and due to the eruption and the multiple layers of ash many wall frescos have survived with their color intact. Also found were complete homes with staircases and pipes were also discovered along with drainage systems and it is believed that these pipes enabled the user to have hot and cold water by way of using the thermal energy of the volcano.

But don’t worry if you are not interested in the archaeological finds of the area, Santorini offers many amenities to its visitors. The views from Santorini are famous the world over, with its white walled homes perched precariously Cliffside with their bright blue painted windows and the black of the volcano behind them make an artist’s hands quiver for a paintbrush and encourage the poet in his prose.

To reach Santorini it is attainable by boat which also will give you stunning views of this oasis in the midst of the Aegean Sea. Once you have arrived on the island it is possible to rent either a car or a motorbike. You will have a hard time choosing one of the beautiful cliff side hotels for your stay but the views are what will captivate you. Once you have settled in to your hotel there are often many tours available to help you navigate the island when you go to explore on your own.

There are many mouth watering restaurants and cafes offered on the island, you can either choose one with a view of the massive lagoon or in one of the villages of Santorini whichever one you choose you will not leave hungry. There are many attractions to be seen on the island, not only the architecture of the many houses, but the museums and churches offer many hours of exploration. The beaches of Santorini Island are as diverse as any you will ever see; Perissa beach appears to go on endlessly with the large rock called Mesa Vouno rising from the sea with its black sand beach to the Red beach which is exactly as it sounds as it is made up of red and black volcanic rocks.

Santorini nightlife can also be found in the larger villages which offer clubs and taverns along the Cliffside with amazing views of the setting sun while you sip your wine or chat with friends. If you have not been to Santorini before it is a destination that should be added to your travel plans, it is a definite not to be missed.
