Rubik’s Cube Pincushion

Since you sew you’ve probably already made yourself a pincushion. No? Well, may I suggest a Rubik’s Cube pincushion? It’s cute, easy to make, and much more unique than other pincushions you can buy or craft. A Rubik’s Cube – once a popular mind bender – has colorful blocks on each side, and the one you make can hold many pins and needles. When you use simple felt to create it you’ll see it’s cheap yet adorable.

Purchase black felt to make the cube itself. You can make the Rubik’s Cube huge, or tiny, so the size you cut the felt squares is up to you. For this instructional, cut six squares to be two and a half inches each.

Cut tiny squares of colored felt to be a half-inch square, each. You’ll need nine of each: blue, green, yellow, red, white, and orange. Position nine of one color on one black felt square, and put a different set of colors on each black square. Or, have fun with it and mix up the colors. Sew these in place, sewing around the perimeter of each tiny square. Leave a strip of the black felt showing between each square, and each row.

Stack two of the felt squares together, so that their right sides are facing each other. Sew down the right-hand side. Open the two squares and lay them in front of you. Take the next felt square and lay it on the square on the right. Sew down the right side to adjoin them. Sew on one more felt square to make a total of four in a row. Fold the row in half and sew the first and the fourth square together, at the edges, to turn the four squares into a cylinder shape, or “band”.

Position the fifth square on top of the band and pin them together. Make the seam of the band become one of the corners. Turn the square inside-out and sew around the perimeter of the fifth square. Then, turn the pincushion right-side-out.

Stuff the pincushion with cotton or foam so that it is full and tightly packed. Position the last square over the stuffing and stitch it in place, using a hand stitch.

There are different things you can do with the Rubik’s Cube pincushion. You can give it the classic colors of the old game, or give it a more modern look, by choosing zebra patterns, cheetah spots, or other interesting designs. And, instead of felt, you can use other light to medium-weight fabrics. Make a Rubik’s Cube or just a cube featuring a different color on each side. No matter how you make it look, you’ll use the unusual pincushion for a very long time.
