Rick Santorum: Consistently Conservative

I was on a treadmill the other night at the gym. When I looked up at some of the TV screens in the workout area I saw Rick Santorum on two different channels. I decided to switch over to one of the channels in order to hear what Mr. Santorum had to say.

Now I must tell you that I do not typically watch CNN. However, on this night I was glad that I did. The host was interviewing Santorum in a very nicely apportioned room in Charleston, South Carolina. As the interview was winding down the host brought in Rick Santorum’s wife Karen and then four of their children. As they spoke about family life, politics and the like, I was very impressed with Mrs. Santorum.

A little later it struck me that Santorum is a man of character. I knew that we agree on most political topics, but I also have to respect the man for standing up for his principles. In politics, one is frequently unable to say that about a candidate. In looking at the final three contenders in the Republican presidential field, and here I throw out Ron Paul because he is not a serious candidate, I respect Mr. Santorum more than I respect Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney.

Rick Santorum likes to say that he is the consistent conservative in this race. I think that is very likely true. I don’t see clips of Rick Santorum saying the crazy things that Newt Gingrich has said nor has he flip-flopped on the major issues of the day as Mr. Romney has done.

I will not pretend to predict the future. One never knows what will happen in a horse race or a political contest. However, what I do know is that if Rick Santorum is the nominee of the Republican Party, conservatives of all stripes will be happy with their candidate. On the other hand, the moderates and the establishment types will be quite disappointed. The very thought of that brings a smile to my face. Speaking of smiles, if Santorum were to become the nominee, it would be quite amusing to see the forced smiles and the faux party unity of the moderates and RINO-types as they express support for Santorum as the nominee of Republican Party.
