Review: Old Dutch Baked Crunchy Curls

Last Friday, I stopped off at the store after work to pick up some bratwurst for dinner. As I was walking to the meat section, I ended up in the store’s sale aisle. Even though they had some great deals, I was watching what I spent and ended up passing on most of the things they had on the shelf; until I came across a bag of Old Dutch Baked Crunchy Curls.

To be honest with you, I’m not really sure what made me buy this product. My first impression of it was it was another Cheetos knock-off and, considering I have not been a huge fan of most Old Dutch products in the past, I really didn’t have a whole lot of reason to believe they were any good. However, when I saw the bag was on sale for just 99 cents, I decided to buy it anyway.

I did not regret that decision.

As I mentioned before, based on my past experiences with Cheetos knock-offs, I really wasn’t expecting too much from this brand. I figured they would be similar in shape and even taste but there would be some sort of difference that didn’t make them quite as good. It turns out I was wrong about that.

I’m going to stop short of saying these are better than Cheetos because I don’t think they are. But, I do think these are every bit as good as the more expensive brand and they even managed to throw in a bit of originality while doing so.

First of all, unlike some other cheaper brands, the Old Dutch Crunchy Curls have quite a bit of cheese on them and the cheese actually has a decent flavor to it. I’ve had plenty of others that tried to hide lower quality with a salty taste. But, this brand did not need to do that. In fact, as my wife pointed out to me, they actually had a bit more to them. I could taste the cheese and the Crunchy Curls also seemed to have a bit of a buttery flavor to them too.

I purchased this product on Friday and my family enjoyed it so much, the bag was gone by Saturday (and I had to use a lot of restraint not to just eat the entire bag myself). As a result of that, I would definitely buy this brand again if given a chance and do recommend it if you are looking for something similar to Cheetos but not quite as expensive.
