Rei Hosokai’s “Balloon Attire” Sells for Thousands, Last a Day

There are no pins or needles needed or wanted to make Rei Hosokai’s perishable and expensive “Balloon Attire.” The Japanese artist is a master at transforming balloons into wearable masterpieces by skillfully twisting and weaving balloons into couture dresses.

The lightweight, transparent creations are structurally destroyed within 24 hours because of deflation and discoloring caused by temperature and humidity. The cost of one of these delicate designs is approximately $2k-$4k, making them very expensive for a one-time deal.

While a single balloon cost about nine cents, this type of art is pricey due to the time consuming and meticulous nature of making one of these fashionable dresses. One could only imagine Hosokai’s frustration level if a fragile bubble popped during such a lengthy process.

Hosokai, 35, started out as a florist before embracing balloon art and opening her “Daisy Balloon” office ten years ago. She has sold 200 wedding dresses and her fashion tends to attract those looking for show stopping party attire. If her goal was to elevate the profile of balloon fashion in the eyes of couture clients, she has accomplished her mission.

Hosokai has won international prizes for her ability to manipulate balloons and create eye-catching “pop” art. She has won the top prize two times in a row at Belgium’s international “Millennium Jam” balloon festival. Her husband, Takashi Kawada of Kotenhits is a frequent collaborator. Hosokai hopes her work will help in the healing process of post-disaster Japan by reminding people of their childhood dreams.
