Recap: ‘Deadliest Warrior: Vampires Vs. Zombies’

“Deadliest Warrior: Vampires vs. Zombies” was an unusual episode in that it pitted two groups of warriors who do not exist outside the pages of fiction or the big and small screens. Thus, it was somewhat controversial.

Spoilers surely follow.

To set up the action, “Deadliest Warrior” made some assumptions about the antagonists.

The vampires were not the cool, elegant creatures of yore who dress well and seduce their food. They are inhumanly fast, super-strong predators with serrated teeth as opposed to fangs and razor-sharp claws in the place of fingernails.

The zombies are more like they are depicted in current movies and TV, shambling about but in great numbers, feeling no pain or remorse and behaving more like a virus. Unlike vampires, they have no intelligence.

The abilities of the simulated vampires and zombies were tested and measured using both human and animal analogues, with vampires assumed to be six times as fast and strong as the most athletic human. There were no weapons involved, aside from those nature granted. To make things “fair,” it was assumed that one vampire equaled 64 zombies.

Mind, if a group of vampires went up against a horde of zombies in “real life,” they would be well-advised to arm themselves with automatic rifles, shotguns, flamethrowers, and so on. However the three vampires who faced down nearly 200 zombies in an abandoned building had to fight with tooth and claw. Furthermore, since it was near dawn, retreat was not an option.

The sensible thing would have been to hold out in a room with limited access and then kill the zombies in ones or twos as they came in. But the vampire trio instead split up and relied on their strength and agility to see them through. This worked for a while, but unfortunately two of the fangers were swarmed and then ripped apart by the zombies, who seem to be content to chomp on undead flesh with as much relish as the human kind. The remaining vampire did manage to wipe out the rest of the zombies, but it seems he was infected by the zombie virus, with disturbing results.
