Modern Faith: An Orgy of Superstitions and Belief

Almost everyone I know identifies with one religion or another, even if they do not practice that religion. It is as if claiming a belief in God justifies their non-participation in the religion. Most people only attend church during the holidays, if ever. Not that anyone wants to see a sudden rash of “Tebowing”, but perhaps the political Right should consider the people they are “representing”.

According to a study by the Harris Interactive, “Many people consider themselves Christians without necessarily believing in some of the key beliefs of Christianity (By Humphrey Taylor, December 15, 2009)”

The Harris Interactive also found, that along with their religious beliefs some adults, as well as many Christians, also believe in ghosts, astrology, witches, and reincarnation, which are all considered “pagan” beliefs that predate Christianity.

This is where I start to laugh. Realizing so many people (82% of those Americans polled according to the Harris Poll) actually believe in the supernatural causes me to throw my hands in the air and just simply give up. No amount of education will ever stop irrational thinking when it comes to “superior beings”.

I have known a many different people who have had various belief ranges. I do not believe I am smarter than most people are, but I do not understand how someone who believes in an all powerful, all creating God, as well as believes Jesus was a real man born of a Virgin can believe that ghost and UFOs exist.

Yet 42% of people who believe in God also believe in Ghost, and 32% of those who believe in God believe in UFOs. One of these beliefs can be truly rationalized, but none of them can be rationalized together. You either believe in God where in turn, you believe in Heaven and Hell or you believe in Ghost. A Ghost would not exist in this belief system because the spirit would be in either Heaven or hell, not roaming the earth free of it’s judgment day.

In order to believe in God, one must believe in a certain time line. God created the earth got it ready then plopped man down on it in 6 days. The bible goes through the next nearly 6000 years rather descriptively. The way the Christians have translated the bible Aliens are not from other planets, rather the Christian people are the Aliens because they come from God in Heaven.

So in order to believe that Aliens exist; one must assume either there was a very big miscommunication in the bible, and yes UFOs did visit earth, bringing people from other planets, or the only other thing out in space is God and Heaven and that can only be reached through death.

What I find to be the funniest coincidence is that out of those who claim to be born again Christians, 25% believe in UFOs while only 16% believe in Evolution. Do aliens and Evolution not go hand in hand? Are Aliens not a species evolved to fit their environment?

I myself am an atheist, though I call myself agnostic because if I do not then I will have to debate the existence of the human conscience. I fully believe that humans can determine right from wrong without the belief of hell fire and damnation. I do not need to fear going to hell to be a good person. As far as custom Christian Morals go, I think the world long ago outgrew hypocrisy. It is about time to stop worrying about what is going on in the bedroom of two consenting adults, and start worrying about the future generation’s civilizations. We are so worried about making sure we put our noses into the sex lives of our adult we are not paying attention to what the earth is telling us.

I understand many people who consider themselves Christians believe that homosexuality is a sin, and immoral, and unnatural. I say it is the answer to over population.

As far as marriage goes, almost every man in the bible had more than one wife. Jacob had two that were sisters, yet he was a favorite of God.

Mention Saddam and Gomorrah all you want, but there is a difference between rape (which is what the men did in the aforementioned city) and homosexuality. To call it unnatural is naïve there are animals that have life time partnerships with members of the same sex, from penguins to bears to insects, every species that exist has homosexual like tendencies.

“Against Nature?,” is a museum display that opened last month at the University of Oslo’s Natural History Museum in Norway, and is presenting 51 species of animals exhibiting homosexuality. So those of you who want to say that God does not create homosexual urges, try explaining to two male Penguins why it isn’t natural to mate with a member of the same sex. Better yet explain it to the two male lions that come to be mates… I bet they will listen oh so well.

What faith comes down to, is belief in stories and morals that have been passed down through the centuries, with plenty of changes, tweaks, and overhauls. Many supernatural fictitious stories have been told so many times throughout the years that belief in ghost, witches, demons, and deities have been warped into superstitious delusions. Those delusions often get mixed into culture and religion. Throughout history many different forms of leadership used superstitious scare tactics to create mass fear as a form of control.

We are empowered in our current day to have the ability to gain truth and knowledge, and to discover that not everything is as laid out before us by popular belief. One time in history many thought the earth was flat, and if one sailed to the edge, they would fall off. We all know the truth behind that now don’t we?

As an Atheist/agnostic I will say it is great to have morals to live by, but why put faith into something that you can not see or touch or feel? Why not instead put your faith into your elected officials, and the forefathers of your country who have spent their lives securing rights for those who go unheard? We do not need a supreme being to tell us what is right and wrong, we have laws that protect people and their property for that.

Separation between church and state is needed, and we do not have it anymore. As an American I demand not to have to face discrimination depending upon who I want to spend my life with. I demand that Christian values be kept out of the court system and our rights be reestablished. It is freedom and liberty for all, not just those who fit the mold.

If the church is demanding to be apart of the legal process then they need to start paying taxes. Why should I, a tax payer have less say then these institutions that do not have to pay taxes? Why should these organizations get to intrude on our rights, and create legislation when they have asked to stay separate from the “state” and have excluded themselves from paying taxes?

You can rant and rave about morals, and faith and rights, but the church opted out of being a part of legislation from the beginning. It is written in the constitution that we Americans have freedom of religion. That does not give exclusive rights to the “Christians”, that goes for any and all religions.

If there is someone out there that wants to worship Aliens and wait for the mother ship to come back for them, they have that right, if there is someone out there who wants to live by the ten commandments, they have that right, if there is someone who wants to worship a God who deems love between consenting adults worship… they have that right, and if there is someone who wants to live everyday trying to be useful, friendly, honest, caring and considerate of all others without declaring a belief in a supernatural being… they have that right.

At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what you believe in, or who you worship or don’t worship. At the end of the day what matters is your consideration of your fellow man/women. Did you do everything in your power to make those that you effect live with the same rights you enjoy? Or do you think you are in someway better and your rights trump theirs?

Perhaps you should “Tebow” on it.
