Jesus Calms a Storm – Simplified Story

Jesus Calms The Storm

One day Jesus and His disciples boarded a fishing boat, Jesus wanted to go over to the other side of the lake to the eastern shore of the Sea of Galilee. As they sailed, Jesus fell asleep and a storm of winds whipped the lake stirring it into a frenzy. Waves were beating the sides of the boat, filling it with water, and the disciples, felt they were in jeopardy. Luke described the effect as a “whirlwind,” but Matthew called it a “shaking,” almost like an earthquake. (Luke 8:22; 23)

Jesus was exhausted from His long journey of ministering to crowds and He went sound asleep as the storm commenced to gain strength and the waters began to rage. It got so bad, the disciples, who were also fisherman, go to Jesus saying, “Master, Master, we parish,” as the disciples feared for their lives. (Luke 8:24)

Jesus rose, saying, “Where is your faith?” Jesus spoke to the wind and the sea, “Peace! Be Still!” The disciples looked at each other, wondering one to another, “What manner of man is this!” As Jesus spoke these words, the winds ceased, and the waves died to a dead calm. Jesus turns to His disciples saying, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” (Luke 8:25; Mark 4:39 – 40) (Matthew 8:23 -27)

Jesus and His disciples arrived at the country of the Gad-a-renes’, which is against Galilee. In the lands, Jesus met a man which was filled with devils for a long time, he wore no clothes and didn’t live in any house, but in the tombs. When the man saw Jesus, the man fell to his knees before Jesus, speaking to Jesus in a loud voice, saying, “What have I to do with thee, Jesus thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.” Luke 8:28; Mark 1:26)

Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Jesus asked the man his name, and the man replied, “Legion”, the man was infected with many devils. There were many swine feeding on the mountain side — the devils went out of the man, entering the swine and they ran violently down a steep place into the lake and drowned. (Luke 8:30, 32, 33,)

The people who were responsible for feeding the swine saw what had happened and they fled throughout the land telling it in the city and in the country. (Luke 8:34) The people of the land came and found what Jesus had done and saw the devils had departed the man as he sit at the feet of Jesus — clothed and in his right mind — the people were afraid. (Luke 8:35)

The people of Gad-a-renes’ gathered around Jesus and ordered Him to depart from them because they were afraid of Him. Jesus returned to the ship and returns back across the lake. (Luke 8:37) The man went throughout the land of Gad-a-renes’ telling the great things Jesus had done for him, and when Jesus returned to the city of Gad-a-renes’, the people were no longer afraid of Jesus and welcomed Him gladly back into their country. (Luke 8:40)
