Ideas for Arranging a Long Narrow Bedroom

Does your bedroom resemble a bowling alley? If it does, you may very well be in a conundrum as to how to arrange your furnishings. Most people place the bed at one end of the room, and the dressers at the other, re-emphasizing the bowling alley effect. These tips will help you create a more balanced room plan.

Separate your long narrow bedroom into zones. One zone can be for lounging, reading, and morning tea. Another zone can be for sleeping, a third zone can be for getting dressed.

Define your zones with furniture. Your bed zone will of course hold a bed and side tables and either a Television or perhaps a portable fireplace. Your lounging zone will contain two small arm chairs or chaise lounges and a table. Your dressing zone will hold dressers, perhaps a makeup table, a mirror, and a bench to sit down and put on lotion, socks, and shoes.

Put your bed in the center of the room to balance the space. If you put the bed at either end, it can cause the room to be unbalanced, especially if it is the largest piece of furniture in the room. The only time you should put the bed at one end of the room or another is if you have more furniture of similar size to balance it out.

Arrange the room for continuity. Don’t place the bed next to the bathroom door as the light and sounds of the bathroom can wake you or your spouse up at night. Also, it makes sense to put the dressing area close to the closet or bath. A great place for a lounging area is near a sunny window.

Use area rugs to define your areas. Placing area rugs under your furniture groupings will further define your zones. Even if you have wall to wall carpet, a colorful rug is always a great addition.
