How to Throw a Roaring 20s Party in Atlantic City, New Jersey

Ex-waif supermodel Kate Moss recently celebrated the Jazz Age along with her nuptials in jolly old England. Her wedding had a 1920s theme and was nicknamed “GG,” for “The Great Gatsby.” The Long Island opulence of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel was Kate’s theme. You can throw a similar party in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

History

When Atlantic City was first born in the 1850s it was prime real estate. It even inspired the popular board game Monopoly. Massive hotels sprung up all along the water and the 1920s was considered Atlantic City’s golden age. From 1920 to 1933, while the rest of the country was liquor dry under prohibition, Atlantic City kept the bootleg drinks flowing freely. During this time the Miss America Pageant was born as a beauty contest called The Atlantic City Pageant. Not far away, the Harlem Renaissance was taking place. This all helped everyone forget the rampant racism and other social ills taking place elsewhere in the country.

Today the Resorts Casino and Hotel hopes to capitalize on that Atlantic City Jazz Age party hearty heritage. They mix the glam of the roaring twenties with contemporary gambling. You don’t have to be a gambler though to throw a party in this splendor.

Wardrobe
The Flapper look is definitely the way to go. Flappers wore shorter hair and skirts. They turned societal norms upside down by showing their obvious pleasure for drinking, dancing, dating, smoking and indulging in the pleasures of jazz music. You can recreate the look with bold makeup a blunt cut wig and knee length skirt.

Music
African American created music known as jazz represented a cultural shift in the 1920s. The music drew ears away from the contemporary classical music of the time, creating great controversy. Radio made it possible for cutting edge jazz music once played on the black fringes to reach the masses.

The Resorts Casino and Hotel always has plenty of jazz going but if you are throwing a party in your suite you should play Louis Armstrong, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton to get a real feel for the time period.

Location
The Resorts Hotel and Casino is hardly a speakeasy as far as I can tell. (I haven’t been invited to visit yet.) However, they have several locations for great parties and good food. Resorts Casino Hotel’s Capriccio serves Italian fare with Old World lanterns and bold columns. You’ll get the closest 20s experience at the after-hours spot, Prohibition. Kudos to them for even having an LGBT nightclub. After all, the 20s claimed to be a time of openness.

You asked for it, so here it is. This month’s domestic travel report. September is a great time to head out to Atlantic City while the weather is still on our side to indulge in a 1920s Great Gatsby party at Resorts Hotel and Casino. That’s the bees knees. Enjoy!
