How to Stay Warm in the Winter

Staying warm during the winter isn’t easy if you’re a cold blooded person. When I first moved to Illinois I could not stay warm most days even indoors. It took a lot of experimenting until I finally figured out how to stay warm during the winter months. Some ways worked while other ways didn’t help at all. Since everyone’s body is different I had to learn what worked for me.

On a bitter cold day wear a long sleeve shirt and a hooded zip-up jacket or a button down sweater. I’ve found it’s easier to cool down or warm up wearing one of them instead of a pullover sweater or sweatshirt. . Why? A pull over sweater or sweatshirt may keep me warm outdoors, but indoors I get too warm. Another trick is wearing a short sleeve shirt with your hooded jacket or button down sweater. If I’m really cold, I’ll wear my hood indoors. If you are a really cold blooded person a camisole or t-shirt can keep you warm too.

Keeping my legs warm is a real battle for me since I’m cold blooded. Leggings or flannel undergarments will add an extra layer of warmth, especially when it’s extremely cold outdoors or your home lack insulation. . Some woman will wear a pair of nylons or tights also.

Since a lot of heat is lost through the feet it’s a battle to keep them warm. Sometimes I’ll wear two pairs of thick socks or one pair of thermal socks. I’ve learned that men’s tube socks keep my feet warmer since woman’s socks tend to be thinner and don’t last as long. Boots are the most important piece of clothing you’ll need for staying warm during the winter months. A pair of dress boots or rain boots isn’t going to keep your feet warm outdoors. When shopping for a pair of boots you’ll need something that keeps your feet dry inside or you’ll have wet socks. Some boots say they’ll keep your feet warm, but their actually for looks only. Some stores will tell you what temperatures how warm your feet stay. Winter boots should be a size or two larger since you’ll be wearing an extra pair of socks. Boots that allow you to tuck your socks into them will keep your pants dry.

Keeping my head and neck warm during the winter is another obstacle especially for a teenager who doesn’t like messed up hair. Wearing ear warmer helps if your child is stubborn about covering their head. If you don’t mind carrying a brush, a winter hat will do the job of keeping your ears and head warm. Covering your ears will prevent frost bite also. To keep your neck warmer wrap a scarf around your mouth and neck. A long scarf is a good substitute if you’ve forgot your hat.

My hands are cold most days so I’ve got creative keeping them warm. I’ve got a pair of Isotoner gloves I’ll use to keep them warm outside and a pair of wrist warmer for indoors. Using the gloves outside keeps my hands from getting cold and wet from the snow. To keep your arms warm a niece set of arm warmers works great especially if you’re. Another great item I’ve used to keep my hands warm is a combination gloves and mitten combination. They appear to be mittens, but you can unbutton them into a pair of gloves with the finger tips exposed. If you drive you’ll need a pair of gloves that’s easy to grip the steering wheel.

Staying warm during winter isn’t an easy thing for anyone, but it’s especially hard for a cold blooded person. If you try a few you’ll stay warmer longer which helps with all the ups and downs of living in a cold climate.
