How to Dress for Your Body

Dressing for your body is probably the hardest thing for a woman to do which is probably because no one teaches a course on the subject. Learning to dress for your body is a strenuous activity because it means coming to terms with your body-embracing the flaws along with the perfection.

In order to choose clothes which match your body perfectly you have to learn what your body type is. A body type is just a way of explaining your proportions. Nothing more. Nothing less. One of the most notorious body types is the hour glass or full figure which is where you are full in your hip area and have a full bust.

Then there is the triangle shape or pear shape which you shoulders and possible bust are small than your hips. The opposite which is the inverted triangle is where your shoulders and bust are fuller than your hips. Finally the box shape or boy shape which all your measurements are small and square. Knowing where your body fits into these categories will help you better decide on what clothes looks great on your body.

Once you have figured out your body type you may want to become familiar with hues and prints and how they work. Hues are just another name for color, and anyone who has studied fashion learned these two things: Light colors make your body appear larger and dark colors make your body appear smaller. Keep those two things in mind when you are buying clothes.

Prints work in the same manner as hues: larger prints make you appear larger and small prints make you appear smaller. Here’s a tip for selecting prints: choose your print based on the dominating or background color. If the dominating color or background is light it will make you appear larger, but if it is dark it will make you appear smaller. Also investing in a color wheel will do wonders because it will allow you to see what colors go together and how to mix them in your wardrobe.

After you have become an expert on all things color, decide on what parts of your body you like and which ones you don’t. Knowing what parts of your body work for you and which ones don’t will help you pick out particular pieces which will flatter the parts of your body you like and camouflage the parts you don’t like. For example, if you don’t like your large breasts then a ruffle blouse may not be something you want to go towards because it brings attention to that area. Go for slimming blouses (dark colors) to minimize the attention to your breast area. Not all body types are the same and not all clothing are made the same, so go for what looks good on you which may mean trying on quite a few pieces until you find the right ones.

Another thing to be mindful of when shopping for clothes to fit your body is what you are wearing underneath your clothes. Women have the same issues when choosing the right undergarments as we do choosing clothes. Body shapers-invest in one. Even the most in-shape woman has a body shaper in her dresser. Body shapers just pull everything together to make the problem areas a little less noticeable. There are full body shapers and certain area body shapers such as thigh shapers. If you are going to where a form fitting dress made out of jersey which is not forgiving, then a body shaper should follow underneath.

Also, knowing what your CORRECT bra size is will do you justice. Over seventy percent of women are wearing the wrong bra size, and make sure you are not one of them. Bras should lift, support, and be comfortable. Your breasts should sit up on your chest properly and there should be no spillage or tight straps, if so, you are wearing the wrong bra. Have a professional measure you in order to receive your accurate bra size. Panties are definitely a subject up for discussion as well. If you have panties that are creating lines on you and creates rolls that means they are too small. The same goes for panties that bunch up and have too much space in the seat area which means they are too big. Panties should be nice and snug and fit comfortably. Know what type of panties goes under certain garments. For example, if you are wearing a jersey dress then line-free panties or a thong would serve you better as opposed to bikinis.

Learning how to dress your body doesn’t have to be a stressful situation, in fact, once you learn what body type you have and how to dress it shopping for clothes will be a hobby for you. It takes time to accept our bodies and what works for us and what doesn’t, but once you start flattering your body with the right clothes the more you will feel good about yourself.
