How the Ocean Got Its Waves and Storms

Long ago, the ocean and the land used to be friends. Everything was calm in the world and both were at peace. It was around this time that the people and animals of the land began to explore the vast land on which they lived. One day, some people emerged over the horizon, walking across the sandy beaches of the land.

The calm ocean breeze quietly whispered to the land, “What in the world are those?!”

The land replied, “These are my people; they walk my lands, cultivating and harvesting, building and exploring.”

The ocean was baffled by this and looked at the creatures that lived inside of him. He saw many types of fish and other aquatic beings but no people. The ocean pressed further, “And how can I get some of these people to live within me as well?”

“You cannot, for, they cannot breathe underwater. They must continue to live with me.”

This statement outraged the ocean. Never before had he been so angry at the land! “I’ll show you!” he thought to himself. The ocean thought and thought to himself of ways to get the sophisticated people to reside with him. He came up with nothing. He grew to hate the land for something he did not and could not have. One day, as he saw people enjoying themselves on the land’s warm sandy beaches, the ocean decided to lash out and try to harm the land and its people. The ocean whirled up a swirl of wind and as it passed across him, it picked up water becoming a typhoon. He saw people cower and run. He enjoyed this newfound dominance that he had over the land and its people. Next he jumped up and down, creating enormous waves called tsunamis. Finally, he threw his last devastating blow: he conjured a hurricane. This was one of the biggest hurricanes ever created. It spanned the entire length of Africa! As it struck, the ocean saw how much he had tried to hurt the land, but to no avail. Whenever he hit the land with anything, the people just ran inland and were completely safe. This started the feud and hard feelings between the ocean and the land. The ocean vowed that he would never stop trying to get revenge on the land for having something that the ocean wanted so badly. Years have passed since this transpired, but even still, the ocean aggresses the land with it’s storms, waves, and other torments. This is why the ocean has its waves and storms today.
