HGTV’s 2011 “Design Star”—It’s Meg!

The 2011 “Design Star” series culminated last night with Meg being awarded her own show on the popular network. After ten weeks of competition, Karl finished in second place.
The final show had the contestants design a room in a Harlem brownstone. In a race that pitted guys versus girls, Meg had an assist from Kellie and Leslie, while Kevin and Mark returned to support Karl.
Meg’s clients requested her assistance with their dining and entertaining area, while Karl’s wanted help with their toy-cluttered living room. Filming was shot throughout the process, with each contestant presenting the design progress.
Meg struggled a bit more than usual on camera, but thanks to the magic of retakes, her end presentation was relaxed and warm. She also saved one of her best design efforts for the finale, presenting her clients with a beautiful, elegant blue dining room. Her “show” featured her as a design “criminologist,” who found and fixed her client’s “design crimes.”
Karl has made a vast improvement in his on camera appearances. His clients liked urban, street graffiti, and Tuscan unfluences. Karl managed to merge this odd mix and create a segment called “Inspired Design.” He again used architectural features in the room, and painted an armoire with an outline of the Brooklyn Bridge.
I wish that the episode had showed more detail in the room designs. They seemed to skirt over the final design in order to fit all of the other elements in the segment. In the end, the judges felt that Meg was the winner. She was led to an adjacent room where she met the other stars of HGTV, her new design family.
We’ll be waiting to see Meg on her new HGTV show. She will also be featured in the soon to be released HGTV magazine. And we’ll also be waiting for a new group of designers, and a new season of “Design Star.”
