Herman Cain Rises in the Polls

Like bread in the oven, Herman Cain is on the rise. We observed renewed consideration for Herman Cain lately. Today, in a Rasmussen poll, Cain tied for first in the GOP candidate race with Mitt Romney, both garnering 29% support of potential Republican voters. Newt Gingrich came in third with 10%, and Perry dropped to fourth with 9%.

Favor for the GOP hopefuls swings up and down, up and down again, depending on what? The wind, or the latest debate, whether a new entrant joined the race, or a thin-wearing stint in the existing one? Herman Cain’s latest rise from the doldrums seems to have been triggered by public perceptions of his 9-9-9 plan.

9-9-9
The nines stand for something like this: 9 percent personal income tax, 9 percent corporate tax, and 9 percent sales tax (Federal) on everything anybody buys. This is a shot in the arm for the national economy, raises the income working folks get to take home, frees businesses of usurious corporate tax rates, and imposes a national sales tax where there isn’t one now on purchased goods. What’s bad?

Not a thing, except maybe folks will need to watch what they buy. But purchasing has always been a personal choice. Some places already collect 9 percent in city and state tax. Another 9 percent would double tax on purchases. Thrifty shoppers may find that difficult to bear, but these same thrifty folks will have much more of their own money to spend at the start!

So, it’s not surprising that the nine-nine-nine plan wound up being a win-win-win for Herman Cain. It made a big difference among the 29 percent of people polled with support for him. Perhaps that support came from the Tea Party, many of whom support Cain anyway. Perhaps that support came from demographic or cultural groups. But pollsters cannot ask for that data lest they be labeled racists.

It’s the economy, people!
We can only surmise the reasons for Cain’s recent rise to favor, but I would bet that it had something to do with the economy.

Hey, it’s got to be good. Sprint, a budget commercial airline in Florida, is offering 9-9-9 fares, as little as $9 round trip to some destinations!
