Halloween’s Scariest Movies (Rosemary’s Baby)

Rosemary’s Baby (1968), written by Ira Leven and directed by Roman Polanski is the older generations Omen, without the graphic horror; but nonetheless powerful enough to scare your shorts off.

Mia Farrow (Rosemary) and her aspiring actor husband played by John Cassavetes have moved into the Dakota hotel (the place where John Lennon was shot), to begin a new life in New York City. While making the transition to the new apartment the couple is befriended by a nosy woman (Ruth Gordon) and her husband. The woman is obnoxiously intrusive but somehow she befriends the young actor and soon has him hanging out at her place like they are bar room buddies. In an unusual incident of morbid serendipity, the part for a play which Rosemary’s husband had competed for and lost becomes his when the other actor suddenly goes blind. (How convenient.)

The whole situation becomes a little too fortuitous and we soon find out that the old geezers next store are cooking more that chicken soup in their crock pot. They have put a spell on Rosemary’s husband and it appears that he has made a trade with the cultish grey hairs: Your first child; for the part in the play.

Meanwhile, Rosemary who is being drugged by the friendly coven next store, her doctor, and her husband, is impregnated by what appears to be a demon during a dream sequence.

Is she dreaming, drugged, drunk, or just plain crazy? You will just have to rent it to find out: Don’t forget to bring a gift for the ghastly baby shower.

My Rating: 4 of 5 Baby Rattles.
