Halloween Horror Movies for Comic Book Fans

With Halloween right around the corner, there are lots of movies to fill up your queue when figuring out what your ghoulish movie night will look like. From classic horror movies to the more recent additions of found footage scares, there is plenty to choose from. However, there are also a nice number of movies for comic book horror fans looking for something fun to fill in their Halloween night in front of the TV. Here are three solid comic book horror adaptations to scare and enthrall the fan in everyone.

“The Crow”

Arguably the greatest horror comic book to see life on the big screen is “The Crow.” It is also one of the most tragic comic book adaptations to see the light of day, following the death of lead actor Brandon Lee on set during the making of the movie.

Lee stars as Eric Draven, a musician who dies at the hands of a ruthless gang under direct orders from a criminal overlord. Draven returns from the grave thanks to a crow using him as a source for vengeance. Originally created by James O’Barr, “The Crow” remains one of the most successful gothic horror comics and the movie, directed by Alex Proyas, is a masterpiece of dystopian horror.

“Tales from the Crypt”

While “The Crow” is a slam-bang action movie, “Tales from the Crypt” offers fans something lighter. There were two movies based on the television show, which itself was based on the classic horror-centric E.C. Comics of the 1950s. Those comics met an early demise thanks to the new Comics Code Authority, which placed so many regulations on comic books that the horror tales were neutered as a result. Since comics were only considered to be for children at the time, the more adult-oriented horror comics died a sad death. After the HBO TV series resurrected the classic tales of horror, two movies closely followed: “Demon Knight,” a tale of possession, and “Bordello of Blood,” a vampire movie.

“Constantine”

While “Constantine,” a comic book adaptation starring Keanu Reeves, was not critically lauded, it remains a wonderful addition to the horror comic movie adaptations. In the comics, John Constantine was a British occult detective in the series “Hellblazer,” hated by Heaven and Hell and always fighting for his own personal redemption. When he was not facing creatures like Swamp Thing, he was fighting cancer caused by his years of smoking.

Part of the backlash for the movie might be casting Reeves as the very British Constantine. Much of the story remains fairly straightforward as Constantine is a cynical occult detective who is constantly fighting Heaven and Hell. It also features a truly frightening performance by Tilda Swinton as a half-breed angel.
