Growing Kalanchoe Blossfeldiana

Kalanchoe is a plant genus comprising over 100 species of flowering plants. One species that is particularly popular among gardeners and landscapers is Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. This perennial flowering herb is commonly known as the kalanchoe plant. It grows 6 to 12 inches in height and spreads a similar width. The leaves are oblong and green, while the flowers are generally pink or red, but occasionally yellow. Its rounded form and compact size makes it an ideal container plant or edging material.

There are several things to consider when planting and growing the kalanchoe plant. The condition of the soil, the climate, and certain pests or diseases can affect the health of Kalanchoe blossfeldiana.

Climate

This is a tropical plant that can’t tolerate cold weather. It is suitable for hardiness zones 10 to 11. It can thrive in regions where drought is common. When planting it, ensure it is partially shaded from the sun.

Soil Conditions

The ideal soil for this plant is light, sandy soil that is well-draining. It tolerates both acidic and alkaline soil, and it is somewhat tolerant to salt exposure.

Watering and Fertilizers

The kalanchoe plant requires very little water. It should be watered occasionally. It is recommended to apply a modest amount of fertilizer once a year to develop the foliage.

Propagation

There are several methods to propagate this plant. Sowing seeds is one option. Another option is to use cuttings taken from the stem.

Pests and Diseases

This plant is affected by the fungal disease leaf spot. Usually, spores invade the plant under humid conditions and damage the leaf with brown spots. If left untreated, the infection could spread to the entire plant. Pruning the affected area and spraying the plant with a fungicidal spray may save the plant.
