Green Living: Homemade Hammock from Recycled Newspaper

Green living is on the mind of many individuals in today’s society. I am one of those individuals. Recently, I looked at a stack of newspapers that I was going to take to the recycle bins and decided with my ingenious mind that I could design a hammock with the newspaper. This ingenious swinging bed is both fun and easy to make. The only downfall to my new homemade hammock is that it must be taken down during inclement weather due to the fact that the paper will dissolve. Make your own paper hammock from 600 full sheets of newspaper and clothesline rope.

Things You’ll Need:

600 full sheets newspaper
Tape
36 feet of clothesline rope
Tape measure
Scissors

Instructions:

Step 1 – Open a sheets of newspaper and create a stack 30 sheets high making sure to match all edges. Position the stack of papers so the long edges are on a vertical axis. Roll the paper from the bottom edge toward the top in a very tight roll. Tape the edge of the roll together to secure. Repeat the process for a total of 20 newspaper rolls.

Step 2 – Measure and cut three pieces of clothesline rope 12 feet long.

Step 3 – Place the three pieces of clothesline rope on a flat work surface so they are parallel to one another. Separate the pieces of rope so there is a 7-inch gap between the center rope and the two outer ropes. Yes, this step will take a large area.

Step 4 – Place the first roll of newspaper, the rung, so it lies across the three ropes and 3-feet from one set of ends. Wrap the rope securely around the paper roll. Tie a double knot on the bottom of the roll. Repeat the process with the remaining two pieces of rope.

Step 5 – Place the next paper rung 3-inches from the last. Repeat Step 4 to secure the roll. Continue this process until all 20 roles are secured.

Step 6 – Gather the three separate ropes on one end of the hammock. Tie the three ropes together with one large knot. Repeat the process on the opposite end. The hammock is now ready for use.
