Giuliana Rancic Diagnosed with Breast Cancer

Giuliana Rancic, an E! News Host and reality TV celebrity, announced on the Today Show on Oct. 17 that she has breast cancer. At 36, she was in the process of her third IVF treatment when doctors found the cancer during a pre-treatment mammogram. She and her husband, Bill, have had to put off their pregnancy plans for the time being to attend to the cancer. Fortunately, it was caught it in the early stages, so her chances look good. It appears that Rancic was fortunate it was even noticed so early, as many fertility doctors do not require women under 40 to undergo a mammogram for IVF. However, her doctor insisted on it, something that could make a big difference in her case.

Statistics show that early diagnosis can increase the chances of successful treatment because it is less likely that the cancer will spread beyond the breast. With more than 40,000 deaths attributed to it in 2007 (the most recent data), it is clear that breast cancer is worth the attention it receives every October. Next only to skin cancer, breast cancer is the second leading cancer in women. Still, there are far more breast cancer survivors than non-survivors. Of those 40,000, there were over 202,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer. There is still much to hope for with this diagnosis.

This announcement comes during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, when people around the nation are having various fundraisers for the cancer that claims the lives of thousands of women every year. Susan G. Komen for the Cure raises the awareness every October with her widely-recognized pink ribbons sold in hundreds of stores, and her website informs visitors of local events they can attend to support breast cancer research, including your local Race for the Cure. The site also allows for breast cancer research donations, and it awards scholarships to leading scientists and college scholars.

Giuliana Rancic is another reminder that breast cancer is real and affecting women from all walks of life. She joins the following list of famous breast cancer victims:
