Giant Home Accents

You can have so much fun when you dig through your junk drawers to find ordinary things which you can use to make unusual home accents. If you’re a person who enjoys decorating in atypical ways you’ll appreciate a craft where you take everyday things from around your home and make them into new wall hangings and other household accents. It’s easy. Just gather up a few things, like a button, an old movie ticket, the front of a distinctive box, or even a zipper, and get busy creating. The best items to use are ones which are fairly flat.

Scan the object you want or just take a picture of it. Upload it and enlarge it using your computer or even a color copier. Print out the image and then attach it to cardboard, matte board, or foam board, to give it dimension. Spray adhesive works well to affix the image without creating wrinkles. A thin coat of white glue will also work but, after gluing the paper to the board, lay books all over it to prevent the wrinkles from happening. When the glue is dry trim the image with a sharp knife.

A partial list of things you can enlarge and use for decorating include a square plastic bread tie, a bottle cap, a coin, a stamp, a key, a sticker, a leaf, a token, a price tag, a game piece, a book cover, a band-aid, a playing card, a dog tag, or even a badge.

There are many different ways to use the enlarged home accents. One way is to just display the objects on the wall. Another is to attach a magnet to the back and stick it to something metallic. Using party-tack putty you can stick the images to a mirror, a cornice, a lamp, a cabinet door, and many other surfaces. Instead of hanging the new accents you can do other things, too, like make a movie theater ticket place mat.

Use things you might already have to enhance the look of the enlarged items. For instance, if you print out a giant movie ticket, you can give the ends a perforated look by using a hole punch. Position the punch so that it will only take out a tiny bit of the edge of the ticket, and do this to both sides, placing the small punches right next to each other. Or, if you’ve printed out a large button, tie a piece of roping through it to represent thread.

You’ll have such fun gathering, printing, and hanging your new home accents. And, just think, you’ll also be getting that junk drawer cleaned out like you’ve been promising for a long time.
