Fall Decorating Trends

This fall, the decorating trends move toward urban chic and global patterns. Throw in heavy rustic wood with city style, and your home is complete and ready for the season. Our urban explorer style travels from India and Africa to Argentina and Morocco. Retro patterns such as paisley and patchwork show up as well as folk style with Scandinavian flair.

At West Elm, they are introducing the fabric designs and patterns of London-based Allegra Hicks. Her style is a mix of eclectic and casual, with a playful side. See her fabrics on window coverings, rugs and pillows. Additionally, West Elm introduces a Kilim sofa in rich jewel tones and a carved wooden table that is created by artisans from Jaipur Indian that mix sculpture and craft to come up with this intricately designed piece of furniture. CB2 is always the first one on the block to introduce fun into everyday living. From vases called Petals and another called Peeps to acrylic flowers and a knitted pouf that screams retro but updated in bright cobalt blue. Looking to bring the outside in? This hopscotch rug made from Argentinean wool is a perfect accessory to loft living. New arrivals at Urban Outfitters, a retailer that never misses an urban trend, include a print of the Periodic Table of The Elements – truly a geek chic gift if I ever saw one, a paisley patchwork quilt and a paisley medallion tapestry perfectly suited for that large wall that you don’t know what to do with. World Market – the go-to retailers for affordable home decor offers a line of throw pillows with a decidedly Scandinavian charm. Espresso browns meet up with bright orange and jeweled teal to complete this series. Though the pillows are not identified as having any Northern European design inspiration I think you will agree that it’s definitely influenced these pillows. Accessories include metal embossed boxes with an antiqued copper finish and a pair of yoga masters in Celadon ceramic. Design Within Reach expands its line of Herman Miller products to include the Noguchi Table in a new color. White Ash takes its place alongside current colors in black, natural cherry and walnut. Don’t miss out on the introduction of the new System 1-2-3 Lounge Chair in Fabric designed by Verner Panton and produced by Verpan. The House and Home Collection at Anthropologie offers shaggy blocks of color in the new Color Field Rug and a patchwork quilt inspired by mosaic patterns, the Tessallae Bedding collection combines farmhouse simplicity with global-centric inspiration. In the kitchen, the doily design we remember from our grandmother’s house has an updated look in a series of Penumbral Doily Dinnerware. From Portugal, this set is dishwasher and microwave safe.

Prices range from affordable from World Market and Urban Outfitters to honest investment at Design Within Reach and Anthropologie. Don’t hesitate to mix and match to establish a perfectly balanced living space. Herman Miller pieces are classic and timeless and are worth saving for. By spending a little less on accessories, allow this mix of pieces to mingle to fashion a personalized living space that expresses who you are.
