Effects of Crystal Meth Addiction

Crystal meth addiction yields a fierce high that keeps people coming back for more. There is the experience of an intense rush of pleasure and euphoria that can last for up to 12 or more hours. The person experiences increased focus, higher energy, confidence, increased sexual ability and feeling desirable. This all sounds wonderful but, on subsequent doses, you need more and more of the drug to get an effect. This is all called tolerance and is common among drugs of abuse like crystal meth.

Repeatedly using crystal meth, as in crystal meth addiction, eventually takes its toll on the body so that their physical health wanes, they lose cognitive abilities and their sexual prowess decreases. They no longer look young and healthy and they lose the ability to experience pleasure without taking the drug.

The rush and euphoria from the drug is considered be why many people start taking it. The addictive potential is fierce and it doesn’t take long before more and more of the medication is needed to achieve the same effect. But crystal meth addiction is, in the beginning anyway, a cheap addiction so people continue using it. It releases dopamine from the brain, controlling pleasure and the experience of pleasure. It releases more dopamine than all other drugs of abuse.

In laboratory experiments, the having of sex causes a release of 100 to 200 unites of dopamine, making it a pleasurable experience. If you use cocaine, you release 350 units of dopamine. With a crystal meth addiction, about 1,250 units of dopamine are release, which is twelve times as much as you get from sex or good food. It begins to replace other activities because you get so much pleasure from doing it. It is a feeling unlike any other feeling you can experience from any other activity or drug. After it wears off, you experience a sudden crash, which causes you to take the drug again. It is a highly addictive experience.

Brain chemistry is changed indefinitely in crystal meth addiction . The wiring in the pleasure centers get destroyed so you can’t experience any pleasure at all, even with a great deal of crystal meth on board. The tissues can regrow over time but it often takes years and may never be the same again.
