Dollywood Drops $20 Million, Builds Wild Eagle Coaster to Soar Above Smoky Mountains

At Dollywood this March, riders will experience exhilaration, the freedom of flight, and a “zero-G” roll on the Wild Eagle, the park’s new steel wing coaster.

The Wild Eagle, which cost $20 million to build, will feature a 3,127 foot journey and a top speed of 61 miles per hour. Riders will maneuver four inversions, including the “zero-G” roll, a giant loop, and a flat spin.

“After the honor of the 2010 Applause Award, we knew that all eyes were on us at Dollywood to see what we’d do next,” Parton said. “Wild Eagle celebrates not only the majestic bald eagle but also my beautiful Smoky Mountains which folks will get a bird’s eye view of as they soar high above Dollywood,” she added.

Wild Eagle’s riders will experience a nearly two-and-a-half minute journey with a 135-foot first drop. Located 210 feet above its landing station, the Wild Eagle aims to provide spectacular views of the Smoky Mountains terrain.

Wild Eagle, the largest capital investment in Dollywood’s 26-year history, celebrates the bald eagle. This raptor’s recent population increase resulted from the work of groups such as the American Eagle Foundation (AEF), which has headquartered at Dollywood for 20 years. The American Eagle Foundation also administers a 1.5-million-cubic-foot outdoor aviary that houses non-releasable bald eagles. One of AEF’s largest benefactors, Dollywood supports the non-profit organization’s efforts to preserve and protect birds of prey.

Each vehicle on the Wild Eagle is fitted with an imposing bald eagle with piercing eyes and wings outstretched for flight. The promotional art delivers an almost surreal, fantasy vibe that builds on the bald eagle concept.

The pioneering Swiss firm of Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M) manufactured the Wild Eagle. B&M, the world’s premier coaster manufacturer, built 11 of the 20 highest-ranking steel coasters in the world, according to Amusement Today magazine.

The Wild Eagle joins Thunderhead, twice named the world’s best wooden coaster, in Dollywood’s award-winning lineup. Mystery Mine, Dollywood’s 1,811-foot-long steel coaster, was named Theme Park Insider’s best new theme park attraction in 2007.

The Applause Award is an industry award for the theme park whose management, operations, and creative accomplishments inspired the industry.

Dollywood operates from late March through December each year. The Wild Eagle is slated to open at the start of the 2012 season. The park offers more than 40 rides and attractions, plus live entertainment and authentic East Tennessee crafters.
