Computer Desk Wrist Rests

It’s funny how things progress. Once, there were no computers. Then, there were zillions of them. Although unknown at first, after many people used computers, they began to realize certain things. All that sitting at the computer can be hard on the back. It can also make your wrist hurt. The wrist that uses the mouse takes a lot of pressure as you position it to operate your computer. You might have to see the doctor to deal with the back pain but, as for the wrist, you probably have everything you need to make a rest to keep your hand from throbbing.

There’s more than one way to make a wrist rest. A very simple way is to use craft foam. It’s thin, comes in a variety of colors, and is really cheap. Cut squares, ovals, rectangles, or other shapes, to make the wrist rest you want. Apply glue to the first shape, stack another on it, put glue on that one, and stack another one. Continue to do that until the wrist rest is as thick as you want it to be. Apply a piece of double-sided tape to the bottom and stick it to the area of the desk where you want it.

A pair of boy’s socks can also be turned into a useful wrist rest. Tube socks make the best choice for socks. If you have tube socks, but they’re for a man, just cut them off to be the length you want. Get a bag of rice out of the cabinet and pour it into the sock. Fill the sock a little over halfway full.

You can sew the end of the sock closed or you can just use fabric glue. After gluing the end use clothes pins or clips to hold it as the glue dries. Slide the second sock over the first one, and sew or glue it shut, too.

A mitten is another article of clothing that can be turned into a wrist rest. First, tuck the thumb of the mitten (this is optional) into the glove itself. Sew or glue the opening of the thumb shut. Fill the mitten with rice and sew or glue the wrist area shut. If the mitten is thick there is no need to slide a second mitten over it. For this wrist rest, or the one made from socks, use double-sided tape to secure it to the desk.

A wrist rest at the store is not all that expensive, but why spend ten bucks or so to own one when you can easily make one yourself? You’ll use your homemade wrist rest for a long time and, if it gets worn out, you can just whip up another one.
