Comparison of Strawberry Protein Shakes for Gastric Bypass Patients

The American Society for Metabolic Surgery suggests that gastric bypass patients consume 1.1 grams of protein per kilogram of ideal body weight daily. Some patients have trouble eating that much protein, especially in the early days after surgery when they can only eat very small amounts of food. Many patients use protein shakes to supplement their diets. Protein shakes came in a wide variety for flavors, including strawberry.

Celebrate Bariatric Supplements Strawberry ENS

ENS (Essential Nutrient Systems) is a unique protein shake because in addition to 25 grams of protein, it provides the equivalent of one multivitamin and 500 mg calcium citrate per serving. One serving contains 140 calories and four grams of sugar. It’s a powder that can be mixed with either milk or water; I think it’s tasty made in the blender with soy milk, half a sliced banana and a handful of ice added.

Chike Strawberry Burst Protein Powder

Chike is one of my favorite protein powders on the market. They have five flavors and all five are delicious. One serving of Chike strawberry burst protein powder provides 28 grams of protein and 190 calories with only three grams of sugar; one serving is two scoops, though, and I typically just use one scoop in eight ounces of skim milk for a total of 215 calories and 22 grams of protein.

Unjury Strawberry Sorbet Protein Powder

Unjury is another popular protein powder. The strawberry sorbet flavor provides 20 grams of protein and 100 calories per serving, along with three grams of sugar. It’s good mixed with either water or skim milk (or soy milk, if you prefer). I like it mixed in the blender with half a cup of water and half a cup of soy milk, along with a handful of frozen mixed berries.

Atkins Ready-to-Drink Strawberry Protein Shake

Most of the time I prefer making my own protein shakes with protein powder and soymilk. Not only do I think they taste better, I can also add other ingredients like half a banana to make a really tasty smoothie. However, sometimes I’m in a hurry and want something I can just grab out of the fridge. At those times, a ready-to-drink protein shake comes in handy. Atkins strawberry shakes are one such option. They contain 15 grams of protein and 160 calories in an 11-ounce serving. They only contain one gram of of sugar.
