BCS Rule Will Hurt the SEC

Being a fan of the Southeastern Conference, I am excited that we have the top three ranked teams in BCS standings because it makes our chances of winning another National Championship very possible since we may have two teams in this game. However, this may be great and all but it isn’t going to give justice to the best conference in college football.

The Southeastern Conference has five teams ranked in the top 13 of the Bowl Championship Series. Two of the teams Georgia and South Carolina have no shot at a national title game. The other three teams LSU , Alabama , and Arkansas are all sitting in line for the National Title game. LSU and Arkansas play each other this week so one of them will drop out of the title race but neither will drop out of the top ten. Yet , the major kicker to all this is Georgia will play against one of the teams in the SEC title game and if they win you will have a possible 5 teams in the top 10 of the BCS standings.

Now onto the bad part of this whole thing. The Bowl Championship Series have a rule :

No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings.

So unless Arkansas beats LSU then loses to Georgia we have no chance of getting three teams into BCS games. This is unfair to the SEC as there are five teams that could end the season in the top ten. Sure , you have automatic bids that must be filled but there aren’t any at-large bids that should pass the SEC teams.
