Audi A1 Sportback Details, Photos Released

The German carmaker has just released the first official photos and details about the new Audi A1 Sportback, the five-door version of the A1 that tries to appeal to customers wanting a little more utility than the current two-door version.

Even though the Audi A1 Sportback has the same length and wheelbase as the two-door version, its width and height were increased each one by 6 mm (0.23 inches), which translates into a little more interior space for back seat passengers. Despite these, the A1 Sportback still only offers seats for four passengers, but customers buying the five-door version will also be able to order a three seat bench for back passengers instead of the two seats currently available on the current version.

The luggage space for the new Audi A1 Sportback is also similar to the one offered by the two-door version, 270 liters and thanks to the split foldable rear seat it can be extended up to 920 liters (32.5 cubic feet). As for the rest of the interior, the Sportback version offers the same interior styling, dashboard and the same range of standard and optional features as its two-door brother.

Under the bonnet, the Audi A1 Sportback comes with a range of three gasoline and three diesel units, delivering between 86 and 185 hp. Gasoline options include the entry level 1.2 TFSI unit that delivers 86 hp and gets an average fuel consumption of 5.1 liters per 100 km (46.1 US mpg). The other gasoline option is a 1.4 liter TFSI engine that is available in two power outputs, 122 and 185 hp, the latter also being the most powerful option, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.0 seconds and reaching a top speed of 227 km/h (141 mph).

For diesel fans, Audi has also prepared three engines, a 1.6 liter TDI unit available with 90 or 105 hp, both getting an average fuel economy of 61.9 US mpg (3.8 liters per 100 km). The most powerful diesel option is the 2.0 liter TDI that delivers 143 hp, sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 8.5 seconds and gets an average fuel economy of 57.3 mpg (4.1 liters per 100 km).

For the 185 hp version of the 1.4 liter TFSI engine a seven-speed S Tronic automatic transmission with double clutch is offered as standard, the gearbox also being available for the other 1.4 TFSI version and for the 90 hp 1.6 liter TDI, but as an option.

According to the Audi press release, the new Audi A1 Sportback will be available in the spring of 2012, with prices in Germany starting at 16,950 Euros (about $23,300).
