Asia: China’s Big Investment, Capability on Call

This week I was sent a photo of China’s new aircraft carrier, the Varyag (Russian name for Viking it seems) as it set sail for sea trials. This trial period is to run the systems it has gained from the refit just completed. China is betting a lot on the ability to expand influences and control in the Asian region. For now this is as should be expected, but tensions in the area are on the rise. Neighboring nations have series concerns about the advances China is making. Any nation developing into the world stage must in time make some kind of changes that will affect it s neighbors.

China has a long history, being one of the oldest nations in our global history. During this history it has been both at the top the world and at times at the bottom of all hell. Since its development of atomic weapons (Hay! Mr. Cain that was in the 1960’s, you obviously have a lot of reading to catch up on!), China has been moving to develop as a modern nation. Yes it still has a lot of problems, political issues and economic developments to do for start. As I said it is moving, not that it has made it to the modern national stage as yet.

This carrier is only a retrofit operation, it is not originally from China and building such a ship would have the Chinese industry over tasked. With all the other major projects this national government is currently doing at one time, it simply could not now. The resources are not available for such an operation or for any major arms buildup at this time. Even if there was, the technology involved can not simply be found at a local hardware store. That is what has taken China so long to retrofit, even renaming the carrier to Shi Lang (a Chinese Admiral); it needed to develop the industry and technology systems to support the retrofitting. But retrofitting is one thing; building from scratch is a complete different task. So China has still had to ask the Russians for help, as for aircraft no domestic supply exist. Now the concern is to what extent China will use the resources it has developed?

To its neighbors China has been both a boom and an adversary. In the Asian region all nations are attempting to develop both economic and social status, there has been some cooperation present between them. But this is only to the extent of political indirectness, meaning to gain themselves they have agreed in principles to things. Directing attention and resources to assisting neighbors or enforcing these agreements is altogether different. In time they will, but only at convince, other nations priorities are not theirs. This has left the area with many hurt feelings towards each nation, the contacts and relationships are strained.

But if this region of the world is to develop it must be able to get past this, China is only one nation there. As any nation advances it tends to progress the entire region to higher levels as well. But this at the cost of resources under one nations controls, therefore acceptance is required by fellow nation’s willingness to move to more modern nationalities. China is moving today, but there once was Japan moving to become modern, yet it did not use a military carrier to do it. India has atomics, but next to it is both China and Pakistan. Certainly such mass weapons would not be in the hands of less than modern nations? So the entire region wants to move into more modern nationalities. The only complaint left is that China has made this move before others in the region. “Sour grapes” from those who have as yet to reach this stage?

As for the world looking upon this it should remember all the business entities that have been moving to China. They came from these modern nations around the world, the same nations that are increasingly buying Chinese’s made goods. Then there is the U.S. treasuries being held by the Chinese. What did you think all those interest payments we have been making were to be used for? The Chinese have been putting all these funds the global corporations have been giving them to use. They are building resources to call on when needed. The only problem is they are building; the rest of the world is flat broke. Welcome to the “sour grapes club” on a global scale.
