Are the New York Jets Contenders or Pretenders?

Even after a comeback win, New York Jets fans still have no faith their team can earn a playoff berth. Why? Well, the first problem is all of the mistakes being made. A few from this past Sunday include Antonio Cromartie’s fumbled punt return and letting wide receiver Stevie Johnson get open with the game on the line.

In addition to these mistakes, the Jets offense can’t run or pass the football with any consistency. And to make matters worse, the Jets need to win the rest of their games.

This Mount Everest size of issues is why Jets fans have no faith. With all of this said, they still have a chance. However, changes must occur soon to give them a realistic shot at earning that much desired playoff berth.

First, the Jets offensive line must improve. They are the foundation of the New York Jets and so far their inability to play well has caused problems for their whole offense. Just look at the numbers.

The Jets are rushing for only 100 yards per game, compared to 178 yards per game in 2009 and 148 yards per game in 2010. Also, Mark Sanchez has already been sacked 25 times this year, compared to 26 times in all of 2009 and 27 times in all of 2010.

If their offensive line can turn things around, the Jets should be able to move the football down the field with ease.

Next, the Jets need to stop making mistakes. They were able to overcome them this past weekend, but they won’t earn a playoff berth if this problem continues. Luck can only last for so long.

Now, this weekend is going to be a good indicator of whether the Jets can make the playoffs or not. If they make the necessary changes, consider them playoff contenders. If these problems continue, consider them playoff pretenders.
