Apparently the media felt that Amelia Earhard resembled Charles Lindburgh. The press had dubbed him Lucky Lindy and so they gave her the the name Lady Lindy. The United Press went as far as calling her “Queen of the Air.”

Amelia went on tour during 1928-1929. She also did a lot of publicity work promoting different things such as luggage. She also plugged Lucky Strike cigarettes. This publicity did not serve her well as a woman. McCalls magazine retracted their offer because the cigarettes presented an image problem. However, she also promoted women’s clothing and sports apparel.

Part of the money she made from the Lucky Strike campaign was used to help sponsor Commander Richard’s Bryd’s expedition to the South Pole.

Amelia wore the fashions she promoted and also sewed her own clothing. The magazine publisher and soon to be husband, George Putnam did much to promote Amelia and make her a household name.

The money she obtained from all the publicity and promotions she was doing helped to fund her flying. Amelia continued to promote women. especially women aviators, when she accepted an assistant editor position with Cosmopolitain.

By 1929 Amelia Earhart began to promote commercial airline travel and was representing Transcontinental Air Transport. Amelia and Charles Lindbergh set up the first shuttle between New York and Washington. D.C. She had invested both time and money into this project. This airline later became known as TWA.

She was the vice president of National Airways later to be known as Eastern Airlines.
