Al Davis Outlines Raiders Future in Death Bed Strategy

The wife and son of the former owner of the Oakland Raiders will inherit the team, while the Raiders’ current CEO will assume negotiations for a new stadium.

The designations, Raiders CEO Amy Trask said, were made by the team’s long-time owner Al Davis prior to his death on Saturday.

“There is a succession plan in place,” Trask said. “The team will remain in the Davis family.”

Davis’ wife, Carol, will retain majority ownership of the team, and the late coach’s son, Mark, will assist head coach Hue Jackson with team-related decisions until a General Manager is hired.

Rumors abound that former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, Jon Gruden will take the job.

Davis praised Gruden in January, calling him “fiesty,” and praising his ability to lead a defense.

Carol and Mark Davis, will retain ownership of the team, despite rumors of a sale, Trask said.

Trask, who has been the team’s CEO for 14 of her 24 years with the organization, said that she will assume control of ongoing negotiations to find a new stadium for the team.

Davis has been the majority stockholder of the Raiders since 1963.

Davis’ last big decision came at the end of the 2010 season, when he replaced former head coach Tom Cable with current Raiders captain . Cable ended his 3 year-run with the team with a depressing 17-27 record.

Comments from Davis made in 2008 appear to rule-out rumors that his son will attempt to assume a hands-on approach to his new shares in the team.

“He doesn’t want to get involved in football,” he said. “He never understood how I could let someone go.”
