Advice for the Newlywed

As the hustle and bustle of the wedding day approaches, parents often have mixed feelings about their child making a commitment to marriage. This means another milestone in their life, and an adventure without parents to be the center of their life. Advice, given with love and understanding of what they may encounter can help to ease the days that might not be so perfect.

Pick Your Battles.

Know when to argue. Not every disagreement or difficult situation needs to turn into an argument; so pick your battles–especially if you tend to fly off at the handle when things don’t go your way.

Calm Down.

Emotions run high in an argument; so before you do something you’ll regret in anger, get your emotions under control by taking a few deep breaths to calm down.

Listen and Think Before You Speak.

Think about what you’re going to say and measure your words before speaking. Watch your tone of voice and make a real effort to speak in an objective way–not cold and accusatory.

Apologize Appropriately.

Offer a sincere and genuine apology after an angry outburst to let the person know that you are sorry for having reacted the way you did. If your anger builds up again, pause a few moments to show you are trying to act more positively.

Walk Away Rather Than Use Force.

If you’re tempted to use physical force when you get “hot under the collar”, walk away immediately. It is better to leave and calm down than to remain and do physical harm by losing control.
