A Heroic Save

Once upon a time, deep down underneath the churning waves of the Pacific Ocean, there lived Noelle, the cutest of all the bottle-nose dolphins in her pod. All the male dolphins adored her, but she preferred to be on her own, swimming in the warm peaceful water without a care in the world.

That all changed the day the fishing boat arrived and lowered its net into the water. Noelle, who had been swimming along, unaware of the large vessel approaching behind her, turned when she heard a voice shouting,

“NET! THERE’S A NET!”

The next thing Noelle knew, she was being shoved out of the way by a strong pair of masculine fins. “That was a close one. Are you okay?”

Noelle met the pair of eyes that belong to the voice.

“You…you saved my life. Thank you.”

He flashed her a wide smile then held out a fin to her.

“I would hope someone would save me from the same fate if I ever needed it. I’m Pierre by the way.”

“I’m Noelle.” She smiled.

“So where were you headed Noelle?” Pierre asked as they started to swim away from the fallen net that had settled on the ocean floor in a heap.

“To find some shrimp or squid to eat. I haven’t seen any mackerel today.”

“Let’s go then. I know of a place inshore that has more shrimp then you can eat. My brothers and sisters and waiting for me there, actually.” Pierre went ahead of her, leading the way.

Minutes later Noelle found herself in the midst of one hundred other bottle-nose dolphins like her.

Pierre made a noise of greeting and they turned around. “Guys this is Noelle. She got herself into a sticky situation that I had to help her out of.” He looked at his pretty new friend. “This is the Roux family. Marie-Claire, Celine, Jean-Luc, Francoise….” He went on until everyone had been introduced.

“We were beginning to think you had ditched us.” Celine giggled as half of them surrounded a school of mackerel and started feeding, swallowing them whole.

The others joined in, taking the remaining by surprise. When everyone had gotten their fill, Pierre invited Noelle to his favorite cove, where they chased and splashed each other for hours until their surroundings grew dark. “Want to meet back here tomorrow?” Noelle asked.

She was starting to fall for her heroic “dolphin in shining armor” and she hoped that he felt the same way.

The following day was spent frolicking near the area where Noelle had been rescued just the day before. They spent all of their time together for the next eighty years, their love expanding to give them two gorgeous daughters who shared the same playful nature as their parents.
