A mudroom is more than just a place to take off shoes and store outdoor gear. If square-footage allows, each family member should have a personal space for storing their coats, keys, shoes and more. It can also include furnishings that many people never think of, at least not initially. Even the smallest informal entryway can include a waterproof area for shoes, a place for keys, individual cubbies and more.
I had a large mudroom in my eastern Indiana home, but I sold the dwelling before implementing my checklist of ideas. If I had the same space for storing outdoor gear and other items, I would add a number of handy storage solutions as well as practical and stylish decor. Go over the following checklist when planning or updating your mudroom. It can become one of the most useful rooms in your home.
Line a Wall with Storage Cubbies or Lockers Topped with Baskets
When coming up with a mudroom checklist, consider adding storage cubbies for each family member. The cubbies do not have to be enclosed. Simple wooden partitions with hooks are sufficient. Depending upon the style of the mudroom, full-size lockers are also ideal.
Use the area on top of the lockers or cubbies for labeled baskets. Assign a basket to each family member, and use the baskets to hold gloves, hats and related items. Basketry is preferable to plastic bins, especially since they add beauty and style to the room.
Dedicate a Space for Wet or Muddy Footwear
A mudroom is designed as a dedicated area for putting on and taking off footwear and dirty clothes, hence the name of the space. A waterproof place for wet or muddy footwear should be on the checklist when planning the design of the room. Thick absorbent rugs are helpful, but plastic trays best for holding wet or soiled shoes and boots. If space allows, place a waterproof footwear tray in front of each cubby or at least by the door. Protect the entryway with high-quality cotton throw rugs.
Add a Mirror to Your Mudroom Checklist
Mirrors are good for more than just checking appearance. A well-placed mirror can visually enlarge a small space. In any case, a mirror should be near the top of the checklist when planning a mudroom. It will provide a place for last-minute hair and facial checks, and it will help lighten and brighten the mudroom.
Consider a Bench with Storage
At least one sturdy bench with storage space should be added to the mudroom checklist. Opt for one or more bench seats with a shoe rack below and storage inside of the seat. The seating area can serve double-duty and hold scarves, earmuffs, extra hats, gloves and anything desired.
Add a Clock to your Mudroom Checklist
If the mudroom is the usual location for entering and exiting the home, add a wall clock to the checklist. Hang it in a highly visible location where it can be viewed while coming in and going out. A wall clock is a valuable tool, and it can beautifully decorate the room along with baskets, benches and more.
