6 Values for a Special Eduacational Program

Here are some helpful values when choosing a special educational program. These are key factors to keep in mind when choosing an educational program for your child. It doesn’t have to be emotionally painful for the child or for the parents. These key values don’t have to be just for special education; as it can be helpful for anyone. Here are the 6 key values:

1) Envisioning Great Expectations: Your child may have capabilities; in which, haven’t been used before. Can the educational program provide different educational skills? Perhaps the child is more tuned in science. Can they incorporate math; while studying rocks or planets?

2) Enhancing Positive Contributions: Does the school offer self-efficiency? Too many times teachers and aides are quick to offer assistance. Is it too much trouble to let a child hand-out crayons and other learning materials?

3) Building on Strengths: The educational program could build on current strengths, while building new ones. Many students have their own natural capacities.

4) Becoming Self-Determined: The student should be guide to their educational program. Giving children choices and letting them choose can promote self-determination. Let them learn responsibility. Even if they choose the wrong choice; this can be a learning tool for the future.

5) Expanding Relationships: The educational program should encourage social situations. This can heighten the quality of life for a student.

6) Ensuring Full Citizenship: Less able doesn’t mean less worthy. They are entitled to fully participate in the program and use every tool that the program has to offer.
