2011 Week 5 NFL Fantasy Football: Top Free Agents

If you are looking for players to add to your fantasy football rosters for Week 5, the following were available in both of my 12-team leagues.

1. WR Pierre Garcon – Indianapolis Colts

With Peyton Manning sidelined and the team’s offense struggling, Colts wide receivers have not had much fantasy value so far this season. In Monday’s game, however, quarterback Curtis Painter connected with Garcon on two long touchdowns (87 yards, 59 yards). The Colts will be playing from behind often this season and Painter is bound to find receivers with passes like these. Defenses will likely focus on Reggie Wayne, so there is potential for Painter and Garcon to develop more of a rapport.

2. WR Steve Breaston – Kansas City Chiefs

Similar to the Colts, the Chiefs will e passing a lot this season. Running back Jamaal Charles is out for the season and the team is struggling to compete. Quarterback Matt Cassel will be passing often and Breaston should be a great option when fellow receiver Dwayne Bowe is covered. Coming to Kansas City as a free agent this season, Breaston has not lived up to his contract yet. But this weekend he managed four catches for 91 yards, hopefully a sign that he is becoming confident in his new system. As a member of the Arizona Cardinals three years ago, Breaston broke 1,000 yards and caught 77 passes. The last two seasons he averaged over 50 receptions and 700 yards. Look for him to make more of a fantasy impact as this season progresses.

Other wide receivers who may be available: Antonio Brown, Preston Parker

3. QB Tavaris Jackson – Seattle Seahawks

If you are struggling at quarterback due to your draft or current injury concerns, take a look at Jackson. While he may not always throw for 300 yards like he did this weekend, Seattle is another team that will be losing (and passing) frequently in 2011. Wide receiver Sidney Rice is playing now, so Jackson’s numbers should be better than they were in the first few weeks. As he learns his new offense, Jackson could be a viable fantasy option in favorable match-ups this season. His three touchdowns this week were his first since Week One, so he could be gaining confidence at a good time to help your team.

Other quarterbacks who may be available: Alex Smith, Matt Cassel
