How does the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis relate to the statement?
Q: How does the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis relate to the statement, “people don’t live in the same world with different labels attached, they live in different worlds”? Why is the hypothesis controversial?
A: The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is ridiculous. It basically states that the way people think about something can’t be universal, maybe similar, but never universal (rarely anyway) When most of us are children, we view people that speak another language as thinking of objects we see or ideas we have differently. This is supposedly the reason why it can be so hard to come up with a direct translation of something. This idea is controversial because it tries to drive a wedge between the various populations of human beings around the world, just as most newfound ways of thinking in the 19th century did.

can someone please tell me what the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis is?
Q: I know its about difference of language or whatnot., but, I need a clear explanation of what it is. I tried wikipedia and other websites, but I need a clearer example and definition of what it is.
A: Sapir-Whorf hypothesis states that people have a set pattern in the way that they think(or understand the world) based off of the language that they speak. For example, Laplanders and Eskimos have many names for snow because they live with a lot of it and this affects the way they think. Compared to someone from the U.S where we only have a handful of name such as snow, sleet, etc.
