A: Because they both play in blue and some supporters of both clubs, along with fans of the Irish team, Linfield, have formed an ‘alliance’ called the Blues Brothers. What is the usage of Control in chemistry?
Q: like i have this project about the benedict test… then my teacher says that there have to be water as a control… and i have no idea what control is… HELP!!!
A: A ‘control’ is usually used in analytical chem, especially qualitative tests, to make certain that no contamination has been added by the reagents and/or equipment. The control should give no positive reaction when run side-by-side with the sample under test using the same reagents, equipment and conditions. Benedict’s reagent contains copper ions, Cu+2, which make it blue. A test sample having reducing properties, eg an aldehyde, will reduce the Cu+2 to Cu+1 and all the way to copper metal…giving the red ppt characteristic of the test. Pure water (making up the same volume as the test soln, same amount of Benedict’s, etc) should give no reaction…should remain blue. If it does not remain blue, the test results are meaningless…and the problem must be found.
