How Hard (and useful) is a Formal Logic class (University Level)?

Q: Hi. I’m interested in taking a formal logic class at my college, and was wondering if any of you had any experience with these type of classes? How is the work load? Is it really hard? (I’ll be taking 5 other classes along with this one, that is why I am concerned about the workload)Also what useful skills can you get out of a Formal Logic class? I’ve heard that Informal Logic is much more practical for everyday situations. Any input would be appreciated, thanks.

A: some people have found formal logic to be quite difficult, but i enjoyed it so spending time working out problems was a bit fun for me. i think–and i am not sure if most would agree with me– that formal logic uses the same kind of thinking that chemistry (or certain math classes) require. I like to think that if you were generally good at high school chemistry and enjoyed it some what you will do fine in formal logic.You do need to spend at least say 30 minutes a day working on derivations (and truth trees) to really get a hang of it. That is, its not the type of course you can do well in by cramming the night before but that doesnt mean that you need to spend a ton of time everyday. You learn it as a skill of manipulating symbols not as something to be memorized. the workload, ie problem sets, really depends on your teacher.As i said before i really liked it so i would recommend taking it, but the first course in logic i took was kind of a mix of formal and informal. about the latter being more useful for everyday, i have found that knowing formal provides you with a much better understanding of the mechanics of logic and why certain claims–conjunctions, disjunctions, conditionals, etc– are true, or not true.both i think are useful, but i cant imagine an informal class really providing you with a proper introduction to logic without reference to formalized symbols. I say take it because you can always drop it if it gets to be too much.

Is philosophy introduction to logic a hard class to take?

Q: I work full time and have kids and need to take this class online. Has anyone ever taken this class and if so what did you think? It is into to logic It will be through Washington online courses. I am trying to figure out whether or not I will have time to take this class.

A: Actually, I found it the easiest of my philosophy classes. Logic is philosophy reduced to math. You learn to break down an argument into premises supporting a conclusion and to analyze them as you would do a math problem. And I’m not talking ‘math’ like calculus, it’s more like ‘math’ as beginning algebra.Take the course! You can do it!
