How would a male with a Myers Briggs Personality score of INFP react and generally get on with a female ISFP?
Q: We all know everyone is an individual and is completely different from anybody else, but certain personality traits can be measured and scored, and thus we get tests like the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, (MBTI). It measures such things as:(I)ntroversion vs. (E)xtroversioni(N)tuition vs. (S)ensing(F)eeling vs. (T)hinking(P)erceiving vs. (J)udgingMy question then is without looking at any other variables such as physical attraction, familiarity, etc., how would a typical female ISFP get on with a typical male INFP personality. If there were to be clashes, in what areas, and if they found a common ground and a mutual admiration, where would that manifest itself?
A: Using just MBTI theory, both the ISFP and the INFP share a dominant Feeling function. Thus both would tend to be very considerate of each others feelings. Both types are very easy going and unstructured. Since the S and the N are opposite modes of perception, and ISFP will focus more on the concrete and immediate while the INFP will focus more on the abstract and distant (the future or the past). This can strain communications. ISFPs will not be as direct as say an ESTJ, but instead will give physical cues to indicate feelings and desires. INFPs will tend to use verbal signals, but carefully couched in diplomatic language that hints at what is needed. So the nonverbal ISFP and the verbal INFP can easily misunderstand or miss what each other are saying. On the other hand, ISFPs tend to be outstanding artists and by artist I mean artistic performers. With their fingers firmly on the pulse of beauty, they can masterfully reproduce whatever moves their aesthetic senses. Conversely, INFPs tend to be less good at actual performance but usually very creative. So think of a marriage between a singer and a songwriter. These two really aren’t going to clash, but are rather more likely to build up hurt feelings that aren’t always shared with the other. At the breaking point one or the other will move to Australia, join the circus, run off with a biker, or join a Buddhist Temple, leaving the other to file for bankruptcy. This is very superficial. If I were you, I’d read all the different type descriptions across the net for ISFP and INFP. I don’t think Keirsey’s temperament theory really does this question justice as too much informtion is lost. Also, ISFPs tend to not be into the MBTI circle like all the various Intuitive types, so there isn’t as much good self-reported information on the internet for the ISFP type.Best wishes,David
How much stock do you take in personality tests like the Myers-Briggs?
Q: I recently took a Myers-Briggs personality test that told me I was an ISTJ. My best career choices would be an accountant, or a computer programmer, or similar desk-jobs.On the other hand, I always thought I’d be a fiction writer, and I am currently a psychology major – congruent with the career choices for INFJs.I realize these tests are just designed to approximate your personality, and nobody fits the exact mold. But I was just wondering who else thought they’d get a different result. And what you did about it?
A: INFJ here:You seem to already understand- right-no one can fit their exact type.To better understand the thing- it’s best to categorize. When I try to discuss a hot button topic with someone- I always try to get to the basic concept and boil it down. After I get to this basic concept, I then want to add the “what-ifs” the “butt-ifs” to the mix to see how the basic concept holds up.The 4 letter code is the basic concept boiled down- but no one is exactly that- so now all the extras can be added that make you as a person.it’s a tool to understand the basic concepts- and that is what I use it for.Also- if you read too much into the questions- you might have answered them not as the asker intended. While I am at heart, and INFJ– I have shifted to more of an ESTJ when I was a supervisor at work.I changed jobs and have now shifted towards INTJ due to the requirements to think logically at my new job.So- the two reasons I think you didn’t code out as you expected is this:1.)You ARE an INFJ, but your current life demands are forcing you to act like an ISTJ. If left to your own devices, you would probably act like the infj you are2.)You over thought the questions, and answered them other then how the test creators intended.
