Q: i dont know if i’m suppose to do it out of these: clinical psychologist, couseling psychologist, developmental psychologist, educational psychologist, enviromental psychologist, experimental psychologist, forensic psychologist, health psychologist, or industrial psychologist..or if there is something different..but yeah- which ones?

A: Of those, I would say that experimental psychologists come the closest to practising basic science. They are trying to further knowledge without particular consideration as to whether the knowledge will have an applied application. The standard for training of clinical psychologists is the “scientist / practitioner” model. Clinical psychologists are supposed to be both scientists and clinicians. So you might say that they practise both. As for purely applied, I would say counselling or forensic psychologists. They both are focused primarily on applied work. Just my opinion, mind you.

Q: I am considering becoming a psychologist because I enjoy helping people through their problems and i also find the human mind and how it works extremely intriguing. A: First get a B.A. and then get a PhD. The APA says all psychologists have a PhD. For good books and info on psychology, see site below. UPenn has a great program for psychology with Dr Seligman as a professor there.

Starting a new psychologist intrusive questions?

Q: I am starting to go to a new psychologist and he sent me a form with many questions. One of his questions is do I have access to firearms and please list every type I have and their locations. Is this an odd question? Is it legal to ask all this on a basic medical form? BTW I don’t have any, but found this strange!

A: It’s not an intrusive questions considering whom you’re going to see. He would be remiss if he didn’t ask if you had more than the obvious means of committing suicide. My doctor asked me about guns, medications and other things that I might harm my self with. Especially if you have a history of trying to commit suicide or even just told someone that you were feeling suicidal.
