Majors in College? Philosophy? Psychology? Help!!?

Q: Okay, my main goal is to become a doctor. And I read that about 50% of philosophy majors who apply to med school get in, 2nd to history majors. Is philosophy interesting or boring? Also, what do you think of psychology. Last year I took the AP Pscyh test without taking the class(really easy) and got a a 5. Is this a better major to choose??Most schools don’t offer pre-med as a major any moreAnd my guidance counselors suck

A: I majored in philosophy before going to law school.I LOVED it. I almost wanted to change my plan and get a PhD in philosophy just so I could continue studying it.It is very different than people think (well i suppose it depends on what classes you take).I took one froofroo class that drove me nuts, but the non-majors thought that it was cool.The lower division courses kind of stink because you have all of the people who want to take a philosophy course in the class, and they are really dumbed down.But the upper division work is really fascinating.Symbolic logic, metaphysics, theory of knowledge all that good stuffDo what you think you would enjoy, and if you think psych would help you more in the long run, of course do that.But I was SO happy I went with philosophy. I enjoyed it every step of the way.(I started as a psych major, it was super easy, but just not mentally challenging enough for me… and since I wasn’t going to technically use the major for anything, I just wasn’t satisfied by not being challenged and decided to change majors)Ps. Be prepared to write a LOT if you go into philosophy. For me that was great, but for some it might be difficult.

A: 1. Help to treat and diagnose those with mental illness and/or those who need help from or want to talk to a professional2. I’m not sure where that is, but as long as there is a client base there, then yes.3. If you get your doctorate then yes, it’s a lucrative career. If you only get your bachelors then your career choices are pretty limited4. I’d try to sincerely listen to their problems and give them the treatment option I think best suited them. I wouldn’t give out medicine to just anyone because I thought it would be a quick fix.5. Personally, I don’t think I would because I have a lot of patience when it comes to listening and helping others.6. I hope they do, I’m sure most of them do if they went to school, received their doctorate, etc.7. The key to success is loving what you do and pushing yourself to be the best at it. 8. It depends. Some have private practices, some work in research, some work at hospitals, some work at schools, etc.9. I think it is to help other people.10. It depends, but if you have your doctorate in it and have a private practice with a good client base then probably in the 6-figure range.
