Why are women more likely to experience Bipolar Disorder II than men?
Q:
A: A woman’s hormone chemistry is much more variable than a man’s as evidenced by their menstrual cycle, PMS and post-partum disorder. Medical studies throughout the world confirm that women are far more likely to suffer from mood disorders than men, including bipolar disorder. Mood disorders are strongly a function of the glandular performance, which in turn affects neurochemistry balance. Stress from a woman’s hormone cycle leads to greater glandular performance issues and related neurochemistry imbalances.
Are women more likely to be diagnosed with mental illness than men?
Q: I think women are probably diagnosed with mental illness more than men. A man will be told he has an anger mgmt problem or “bad temper”, while a woman will be diagnosed with bipolar disorder. In jail, they will probably be given the same meds, though the man is considered mentally healthy. In a domestic violence situation, its more likely that the woman will be treated for mental illness because she was duped by a psychopath, than it is for the psychopath to be treated. There are many men that are undiagnosed bipolar and their lives changed drastically with meds, they stayed out of jail and off drugs, and excelled in their careers. Do they deserve tx? They must be treated, to prevent the harm/death of their loved ones. I know a woman asked that her husband be committed when the cops came out on a domestic, and cops wouldnt cuz he was not a threat to himself or others, though he just beat her and kids and threatened to kill them. She got mad and they threatened to commit her!
A: This is the tragedy. In this patriarchal world it is the woman which is always at the receiing end. The male chauvnists who would rather prefer to commit the wife of a psychopath to an institution for such a gross judgement hardly know that a psychopath could be as normal as anybody oterwise. Do they expect her to subject him under tension and bring out his violence before marrying him? But what you stated is a fact. The police and even some social workers seek escape in committing a woman and leaving her wards to the tender mercies of the psychopath husband or the orphnages.
What are the differences in the mental health of a man with bipolar disorder vs. a woman with the disorder?
Q: What characteristics show in men that women don’t have and vice versa? Are men more likely to be overpossessive and more controlling and have more thoughts of self grandeur than women?
A: Should be nothing I think. Bipolar disorder is not a single disease but a spectrum of disorders. The basic psychological makeup of man and woman should shine through. Look up “bi-polar disorder” in a Yahoo! web search.
