Dying in your sleep… is there a sleep disorder where you dream you’re dying and you actually die?

Q: My father said he was watching the show “1001 Ways to Die” on Spike TV and there is actual medical research that proves if you die in your dream or actually have impact when falling out of a window – you will die! I told him there was no way you could prove that, because if someone dies, they won’t live to tell you about the dream. But he said it’s been proven and there is a way for doctors to do an autopsy on the brain to tell if you had this type of dream. He said it’s an actual “sleep disorder” that is fatal. I tried to research it with no luck, because I’m not a believer! A: There isn’t any sleep disorder that I am aware of where you would dream yourself to death. There is a sleep disorder called sleep apnea that can lead to a cardiac arrest, but that’s because you quit breathing for too long. There isn’t any way to examine a brain after death to find out what it was doing before you died. Tests of the brain all require a live, working brain because what you are looking at is electrical activity and blood flow- two things missing in a dead person. I don’t think you can dream yourself to death, nor that you would die if you dreamt you impacted the ground or something. And as you point out, you would be hard pressed to find the evidence, since the dead person could not answer the question. I think this one needs to be taken with a large grain of salt, if not the entire shaker. He must have misunderstood what they were saying.

A: No. I’ve dreamed I died numerous times and never woke up to find myself dead….
